2008 Balance Sheet

The Frostburn 2008 Balance Sheet is available online:

http://www.frostburnpgh.com/BalanceSheet2008.pdf

Thanks to the wonderful support of our community, we were able to use ticket income to cover expenses that we expected to pay out of pocket… and we still managed to have money left over!

We discussed many possibilities for the balance, including the options of creating art grants next year or using the 2008 profit as a hedge fund for 2009.  Eventually, however, we decided to refund the money to those ticket holders who spent more than was necessary on admission.  This year, that meant refunding the “premium” amount paid by our four underwriters (people who paid more than $50 per ticket during the presale period).

Although it’s too early to predict what will happen next year, we hope to reduce ticket prices, leaving participants more money to spend on discretionary contributions such as art projects, performances, theme camps and refreshments.  And we hope that the lessons we learned this year will make Frostburn 2009 that-much-better!

Thank you again to all of our supporters for making Western Pennsylvania’s premiere regional burn a success!  We look forward to seeing you again next year!

Peace,

Frostburn

Announcing the official Frostburn “decom” after-party!  Help us celebrate the success of our premiere regional burn and enjoy a little more of that  burner vibe–the one that makes us tolerate camping in adverse conditions with a smile on our faces and love in our hearts!

FROSTBURN DECOM

Bring fire toys (poi, staff, etc) if you want to “light up” in the back yard.  Gifts of food, drink, or whatever else you’d like to share with the community are most appreciated.  And don’t worry about the drive home, because crash space is available!  On-street parking is limited, so please carpool if you can.

Thank You, Frostburners! :)

THANK YOU to everyone who attended Frostburn, for a weekend that far exceeded our hopes and expectations!  We couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to share the burner vibe with Western Pennsylvania: without the fire performers from the South, Mid-Atlantic theme camps, Midwest volunteers, Northeast party spirit or local cooks and artists, our premiere burn wouldn’t have been so amazing.  It may not show on the thermometer, but Pittsburgh is a little warmer this February thanks to YOUR efforts!

If you have photos, please send the link, and let us know if we can share them!

If you turned in a census form before leaving, thank you again.  If you didn’t get the chance, or you would like to provide additional comments, please email your thoughts and suggestions over the next week.  We’ll have a pow-wow soon, to read and discuss your feedback and brainstorm ways to create an even-better event next year.  But first, we have to scrape the ice and snow from our gear, and catch up on the email (and everything/everyone else) we’ve been neglecting these past few days…

Cooper’s Lake Campground has invited us back, and although there is so much to do before we can think about 2009, we hope you’ll return and contribute to our next burn.  Please reserve January 16-19, 2009 (Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday weekend) on your calendars today!

Thank you, once again, for Sharing the Warmth!

Peace,

Frostburn

Important FROSTBURN Information

Filed under: administration, survival — Frostburn @ 06:41

We are haulin’ ass to bring a fantastic winter burn together for you, and we’re hella excited that you’re going to be a part of it! THANK YOU FOR JOINING OUR COMMUNITY and helping to make it the greatest thing to ever happen in February! :)

Frostburn is more than an event, it’s an ADVENTURE. And the adventure begins the moment you get into your vehicle. The weather is expected to be wintery: snow, ice, and freezing rain are all likely. LEAVE EARLY. EXPECT TO ARRIVE LATE. Take your time, and be careful! Don’t let winter weather ruin your determination OR test your patience. The party starts when YOU arrive! ;)

Read the survival guide before packing! Most of the mistakes you could make
will be avoided if you invest a few minutes of your time:
http://www.frostburnpgh.com/Frostburn2008SurvivalGuide.pdf

There is a new Pilot truck stop on US-422 just off I-79 on the way toward the campground. They have showers, a Subway and McDonalds, groceries, tools, vehicle supplies, and of course fuel. Fill up on your way inbound!

Also:

  • Be prepared to pack out your gray water, although we might have other options available when you arrive.
  • Bring all the fresh water you will need, including water to extinguish your fires.
  • Ashes from you campfires can be left in the campground’s rings.
  • Flammable liquids must not be stored in the indoor camping area.
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle! And bring enough trash bags to pack out your waste.
  • Remember, Frostburn is a do-ocracy: if there’s something you want to see or do there, it’s up to YOU to make it happen! If you leave the event saying that it was missing something, blame yourself for not bringing it. :p
  • Please don’t ask us for special favors right now, we’re incredibly busy trying to get things ready for your arrival. Radical self-reliance has already kicked in!

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR COMING! We can hardly wait to meet you!

Grey Water @ Frostburn

We’ve been asked, “What’s the official position on grey water? It will probably be too cold for an evaporation pond, so how do we get rid of it?”

The official answer is: We’re not 100% sure yet.

Leave No Trace guidelines suggest that you should be prepared to pack out any grey water you bring with you. Also, it is never acceptable to dump grey water where it can contaminate soil or fresh water.

Depending on the temperature, however, we might have an alternate method of disposal available. Unfortunately, the answer won’t be known until the start of the event, because the weather is far from predictable.

Sorry we don’t have a more definite policy at this time! Plan to pack out your gray water, but don’t be surprised if an alternative is available when you reach the event.

Placement Occurs This Weekend!

Filed under: administration, art, camping — Frostburn @ 12:37

If you purchased admission to Frostburn before February 1st, you should have received an email asking you to spell out your indoor and/or outdoor camping requirements. If you did not receive it, please check your “inbox,” “spam” or “trash” folder for the email address that you’ve registered with PayPal. If you still can’t find the message, contact us to have it re-sent.

We’re visiting the campground this weekend to lay out the indoor camping space, so we need to know your requirements before then. If we don’t hear from you, your allocated space might not be the right size or dimensions when you arrive. If that happens, you’ll have to either squeeze yourself into the alloted space, or camp outside of the heated area. We don’t want that to happen, so please let us know your needs ASAP!

Also, this Sunday at 2:00pm is the scheduled site visit for artists and theme camps. If you’ve already registered your installation or theme camp but don’t know where you want to put it, stop by then to explore the venue and choose a location. Please contact us before this weekend to let us know we should expect you.

We’re excited to have so many participants attending Frostburn from Pittsburgh and across North America!  See you next weekend… if not sooner!

Radical Self-Reliance: Getting There

A lot of burners have been asking us for financial assistance (art grants, discount admission) to attend Frostburn this year. Although we’d love to see you and your projects make it to the event, the principle of “radical self-reliance” begins before you make it through the gates—you’re going to have to discover, exercise and rely on your inner resources to get here, too.

That said, here are a couple of suggestions that might make the journey a bit more feasible for those of you who’s determination is greater than your cash flow:

  • Throw a fundraiser — many of the largest theme camps and art installations at Burning Man hold fundraising events at home to pay for their journey to the desert. These include parties, raffles and service auctions. If you offer something of value to your local community, you might be surprised how supportive they will be of your effort to make it to Frostburn!
  • Invite participation — just because the Frostburn event staff can’t provide financial assistance, doesn’t mean there aren’t members of the Frostburn community that are interested in lending a hand. If you know someone who’s coming but hasn’t planned a project of their own, invite them to join you—make it a team effort! If you provide the sweat equity, someone else might be willing to foot the bill. Or maybe, just maybe, you can assemble a team that will share in the grunt work as well! A few great ways to reach out to the community are through your local discussion list, the Pittsburgh Burners list, and the Frostburn discuss list.

So before you give up, try one or both of these outlets. We hope you’ll find that a little bit of outreach can go a long way!

Frostburn Discount Indoor Camping & Firewood Sales End Thursday!

Filed under: administration, camping, community, survival, ticketing — Frostburn @ 18:23

If you plan to attend Frostburn (Western PA’s Premiere Regional Burn), but you don’t want to miss out on the free indoor camping space, you’d better purchase your admission by this Thursday, January 31, 2008! If you don’t have space reserved before February, expect to pitch your tent outdoors—no matter how cold it gets! Discount admission sales also end with the month, so if you buy in February, you pay more but get less for your money!

Due to higher-than-anticipated sales, indoor space is running out and allocations will be strictly enforced at the event. If your tent is larger than 40 square feet (per person), be sure to purchase your extra space while it’s still available!

We’d also like to remind you that all firewood at the campground must be purchased through us, due to a state-imposed quarantine. To guarantee your supply, purchase a truckload of firewood using our website before the same deadline!

More Info: http://www.frostburnpgh.com/tickets.html

Finally, we offer a huge THANK YOU to everyone who’s already purchased admission and provided such great support for our Premiere Regional Burn! Whether you’re coming hundreds of miles or live just a few minutes away, we appreciate your commitment to the event and welcome you to our community!  We’d especially like to thank those that have registered art installations, theme camps and events, and everyone that’s purchased higher-priced admission as a show of financial support.  XOXO!
